Following on from the first ever ecological/carbon footprint of a national public health conference undertaken at the 16th APHF in Liverpool in 2008, we are working with the Brighton Centre, the hotels and our delegates to ensure that the ecological/carbon footprint of the Forum is reduced to the minimum possible in 2009.
Delegates are encouraged to reduce their own contribution to the footprint by walking and cycling locally and by using public transport where possible.
What we are doing
To encourage delegates to use public transport when attending the conference, details of trains and bike hire will be made available to delegates on this page shortly. Bike stands will also be added to the Brighton Centre to facilitate this.
The committee are delighted to announce that for the duration of the Forum they will be staying at the Brighton House B&B;, a sustainable hotel in Brighton.
Winner of the Responsible business award in 2007, The Brighton House has a strong focus on sustainability, all power being supplied by wind and many policies in place that show awareness of any environmental impact. Please go to www.brighton-house.co.uk for further details.
The majority of accommodation offered to delegates when booking has been reviewed on their environmental policies to allow delegates to make an informed decision.
The results of the 2009 Carbon/eco footprint showed that meat and the sustainability of cattle farming proved one of the greatest impacts.
The Committee has therefore decided that the 2009 Forum will be Meat-Free. A fully vegetarian menu will be provided at both the Conference and the Conference Dinner, where delicious alternatives will be served.
Marketing has always been an area of concern for UKPHA when considering sustainable conferencing. This year shows a significant reduction in the use of paper materials, a lower number of a smaller sized material are produced, using 100% recycled post-consumer waste. A greater emphasis on e-marketing will also be applied by the Conference organisers.
The results of the 2008 Carbon/eco footprint conducted by Best Foot Forward, will be made available on the UKPHA website shortly.
